Ayurveda
The traditional system of healing in India. The word derives from the Sanskrit words
ayus, meaning 'life' or 'life principle', and
veda, 'a system of knowledge'. There is no known date for its origin (the Indians themselves say it was handed down from Brahma, the supreme God), but it is known to have been in use for at least four thousand years.
The treaments are described in great detail, even from the earliest times, and a variety of remedies are used, based on herbs, minerals and animal products. However, unlike most traditional systems, surgery is also used.
Because of its long use and proven efficacy, Ayurveda is still recognised today and operates side-by-side in India with Western medicine.
